2014 Wessex Group Show

Derek Phillips retained the Wessex Championship at the groups 26th Annual show on Sunday 13th April 2014.

Despite the early season 15 exhibitors old and new managed a comprehensive display of all daffodils divisions and colour classifications in Henton Village Hall.

The Society’s Gilt Medal was awarded to Derek for the Championship winning entry of: Moon Shadow; Cutting Edge; Crowndale; Entrepreneur; Centrefold and Round Oak. It was a closely fought contest between seven exhibitors and Ivor Clark, as runner up, was just half a point behind with an entry that contained both the Best Bloom in the show Div.3 Badgeworth, and the Reserve Best Bloom Div.2 Banker. Evelyn Jane’s exhibit contained the Best Div.1 bloom Disquiet.

The Society’s Silver Medal for most points in show went to Chris Yates, many of whose self raised varieties were entered throughout the open classes and also delighted us in the seedling classes.

The Society’s Bronze Medal was won by Evelyn Jane, whose 3X3 exhibit of Cape Cornwall; Purbeck; and Disquiet was the best exhibit in Championship Classes 2-5.   Purbeck was also judged to be the best vase of three blooms in the show.

The Frank Calcraft Memorial for a collection of Div. 5-13 blooms went to Jackie Petherbridge with: N.Henriquesii; Rikki; Fairy Chimes; N.Rupicola; Little Rusky, and N.Bulbocodium. Jackie also won the miniature section of the show. We would expect nothing less.

The American Daffodil Society ribbon for five American bred varieties was won once again by Derek Phillips with a colourful vase of New Penny; All American; American Heritage; Blue Danube; and Oregon Pioneer.

In the other classes Frank Newbery did well in the Div.1 section; Derek in the Div.2s; Chris Yates in Divs.3 and 4, although Ivor Clark had best Div.4 with ‘Crowndale’. Evelyn excelled in the 5-13s although Derek had Best 5-13 bloom with ‘Ice Wings’.

It was good to see new exhibitors this year, with Jennifer Dean taking a first prize in the pot class with a particularly fine exhibit of ‘Hawera’.

The local Henton Class was once again well supported, Angela Marsh being awarded Best local exhibit this year.
