Alan was a successful gardener and exhibitor of flowers and produce and when he became interested in daffodils he was a competitor to be reckoned with. This photo shows Alan, on the left, receiving one of many awards, including a prized silver medal, from group Chairman Derek Phillips at the DS: Wessex group show in 2013.
Always cheerful, always generous when other flowers were better than his own and together with his wife Angela they played a large part in the success of the DS: Wessex group. He will be greatly missed.

Alan and Angela Purnell were a great team. In latter years Alan exhibited all daffodils but miniatures which Angela then showed with some success and some gentle teasing at Alan’s expense.
Always willing to lend a hand, they knew what was needed behind the scenes and pitched in with goodwill and good humour. The DS Wessex group will miss him.
