Jim Pearce 1924 – 2013

It is with great sadness that the Society announces the death of Jim Pearce, our much loved and respected former President, after a period of ill health. Jim’s contribution to every aspect of the Society is almost immeasurable and his loyalty unquestionable. He set an incredible record of 50 years unbroken attendance at the Society’s Annual General Meetings. Our sincere condolences go to his family. An obituary will follow.

Jim was my mentor when Lynne and I first joined The Daffodil
Society in the early 1970’s and indeed, it was with Jim and his lovely
wife Marian that we made our first ever trips to Spain to go daffodil
hunting many years ago. Were it not for Jim, we would not be here now
doing the very thing he loved doing himself, rolling up his sleeves and
climbing up the nearest mountain to find daffodils. Jim was a great
gardener who had been involved with the Daffodil Society since it was
The Midland Daffodil Society and without a shadow of a doubt he WAS the
Daffodil Society for many years as it’s General and Show Secretary. We
will certainly never see his like again and we will miss him dearly. We
send Marian and the family our Love and warmest wishes and our sorrow
that we can not be there for his funeral.

  3. Malcolm Bradbury says:

We will all miss Jim who was always a fount of practical knowledge on anything that grew. It was Jim who encouraged my interest in daffodils after I had written an article for the Journal about the relative flowering times of daffodil cultivars. He offered to take me to the Daffodil Society’s AGM, which turned out to be so badly attended that I came away a member of the Committee! Thank you Jim for all your advice over the years.

  4. Ginny Evans says:

Jim was my saviour when we bought a house with nearly 4 acres of scrappy fields in the upper Stour valley on the Essex/Suffolk borders in 1994. Over the next 14 years with his advice, practical help and vision we transformed it into a wonderful garden. His witty and pithy comments made every gardening job fun and informative. He will be much missed.
