The late Don Barnes

It is with sadness that we hear of the death of Don Barnes.

Don was the “Secretary” of the Daffodil Society for many years but in reality performed any number of responsibilities to ensure that the Society was organised efficiently and lawfully, held a successful annual show, judges were supervised and appointed and the Society communicated effectively with its members via his Editorship of the Journal and the Newsletter.
His distinctive laughter could be heard around the show hall and he staged the most beautiful daffodils aided by his faithful show cardigan and a flask of staging water.

He was also the author of the definitive book on Daffodils. Daffodils for home garden and show was published in 1987.

So sad to hear that Don has passed away. Over the years he did so much for the Daffodil Society. When Richard and I joined the society he took us under his wing and we learned so much from him. When we were Treasurers he was always there to guide us. We became very good friends with him and his wife Carol and spent many happy times together. A character and very good friend who will be very sadly missed

Sad news. Don gave me great encouragement, advice & inspiration when I first started growing daffs from which I have had so many years enjoyment. I will be ever grateful and remember him with fondness. Thank you Don – R.I.P.
