Very sad to hear of the passing of Steve who was a raiser of many superb daffodils but also an ebullient character who was full of fun and it was a joy to be in his company.
I had the pleasure of visiting his ‘back yard’, as the Americans term it, to view his flowers on a couple of occasions and was made most welcome.
He was also an ‘auctioneer’ at the ADS bulb sales for a number of years and his ‘style’ was responsible for raising huge amounts of money for their coffers.
He also entertained us as one of the guest speakers at our Centenary celebrations in 1998

  2. Malcolm Bradbury says:

Stephen (Steve to everybody) will be much missed, particularly in the U.S.A. He and his wife Heather who predeceased him, took an active part in the week long tour of daffodil shows, gardens and growers that the Society organised as part of its Centenary celebrations in 1998. A jovial man Steve was very much the life and soul of the party.
He had the courage and tenacity to bring lots of daffodils with him and entered the Engleheart Cup at the RHS Daffodil Show that year. Unusually, the class attracted six entrants and Steve was unplaced. A distinctive feature of his entry was that in addition to cultivars from divisions 1-4, it included standard sized daffodils from the species based divisions.
Although Steve raised many excellent daffodils relatively few of them were grown by enthusiasts here, perhaps because of the complications involved in importing them. An exception was the unusually coloured miniature ‘Edgedin Gold’7W/Y-Y raised from ‘Baby Moon’ O.P. (2002).

I love reading about my father and his shows as well as the mark he left on the daffodil world. He will be missed. Anyone needing information for his memorial, (Malcolm, especially you, I have tried to contact you but your email seems to be out of date), please let me know. I would be happy to provide.
